Dreamy Patchwork Collage Painting

Class Description

For this project we'll use a variety of mixed media technique to create two paintings that will be wonderfully layered and textured. First we'll create a colorful and textured background using paints and collage papers. I'll then share with you some secrets and tips on how to draw and then paint your subject so that your beatiuful backgroud peeks through. I'll also share with you unintimidating ways to work with oil paints (specifically for the face). We'll finish up our paintings with details using a white gel pen, charcoal pencils, and more.

Students Should Bring:

• two canvas boards, size 9x12 (they don't have to be the expensive ones)
• a variety of patterned papers to use in your collages
• any other collage bits (stamps, stickers, etc) that you may want to add for interest
• palette paper (the disposable kind)
• scissors
• white gel pen
• charcoal pencils (one HB and one 3B would work perfectly)
• gel medium (i like to use golden's regular gel medium in 'gloss')
• brayer
• eraser
• foam brushes (a couple small and medium sized)
• Tim Holtz™ Distress Ink Pads - the walnut color is best
• a variety of fluid acrylics - i like the small bottles by golden. be sure to include titanium white and a brown
• paper towel or two
• paint brushes - one detail brush, one small, and two medium size will do
• gesso
• black oil pastel
• a piece of bubble wrap
• shiva artsit's paintstiks in black, white, burnt sienna, burnt umber, alzarin crimson, and yellow ochre
• a regular #2 pencil (sharpened)
• one black "stabilo all" pencil
• heat gun

Kelly Rae Roberts is a mixed media painter, author, and possibilitarian.
